Cashmere Season 2024

I love cashmere because it's thin enough for the fall transition and perfect for layering under a wool coat or puffer in winter. It's soft and not scratchy and always classically chic. This year, we tested all the great brands for you, so you don't have to. My favorites were Madewell, The Row, White Warren, and Tibi this year.

Cashmere sweaters have long been synonymous with luxury, warmth, and style. Known for their soft texture, cashmere pieces combine comfort and elegance, making them essential for any cold-weather wardrobe. But not all cashmere sweaters are created equal. Factors such as cashmere quality, knitting techniques, brand reputation, and price can all impact the experience you get from your sweater. If you're considering investing in a cashmere sweater, here's everything you need to know, including the best brands to buy from.

What is Cashmere?

Cashmere comes from cashmere goats, primarily found in Mongolia, China, and Central Asia. The material is finer, lighter, and warmer than traditional wool, making it ideal for insulation while still feeling lightweight. Cashmere fibers are separated and graded by their thickness and length, with the finest fibers being the softest, most durable, and most expensive.

How to Choose a Quality Cashmere Sweater

When shopping for cashmere, here are some factors to consider:

1. Fiber Length and Thickness: The best cashmere is made from long, fine fibers, which makes for a soft, pill-resistant sweater that maintains its shape over time. Higher-grade cashmere is often labeled as “Grade A” and is typically worth the investment.

2. Knitting Technique: High-quality cashmere sweaters often use two-ply knitting, which means two threads are twisted together before knitting, enhancing durability and warmth.

3. Touch and Feel: Quality cashmere should feel soft and smooth, not itchy or rough. A light sheen can be a good indicator of quality, as it often reflects the fineness of the fibers.

Caring for Cashmere

Cashmere requires delicate handling to maintain its softness and shape. Hand-washing in cold water with a gentle detergent is ideal, and drying flat helps prevent stretching. Avoid wearing your sweater repeatedly without letting it rest to extend its life, as cashmere fibers benefit from time to "relax" between wears.
